Ocean Adventure Day in San Pedro

Explore a salt marsh, see sea lions and pelicans, sail a ship on the ocean, help the environment, and learn about these things and more!

Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Marine Mammal Care Center, International Bird Rescue, and Los Angeles Maritime Institute have joined forces to present to you an entire day of fun and exciting ocean science activities, all within a few minutes drive.  You can pick just your favorite or spend all day doing and learning different things near the beach, ocean cliffs, and the Los Angeles harbor.

At the Cabrillo Aquarium  (Free; open to all ages):

Beach Cleanup: 9 am – 12 pm (Registration: 9 am – 11:30 am)

Take action for earth day!

Take action to help our local environment for Earth Day! Learn about the impact of microplastics and help clean our community's beautiful Cabrillo Beach on #CMAtakeactionday.

• Interactive activities on the beach including a nurdle and microplastic challenge with prizes, a sand crab station, a beach wrack station, a bird watching station and grunion hatching on the hour.

• Kayak Kleanup — B.Y.O.B (Bring Your Own Boat and provide your own life vest) If you are interested in the kayak kleanup, please email programs@cmaqua.org

• Free 4 hour parking for beach cleaners

Help make this a “ZERO WASTE” event - bring your own gloves, trash buckets and re-usable water bottle!

 

Salt Marsh Open House: 1 pm - 4 pm

Join CMA Educators to learn about the Salinas de San Pedro wetlands habitat at Cabrillo Beach by using binoculars and microscopes to observe live animals. Visitors can view the birds of the marsh, learn about native plants and observe the changes in the tides.

 Author Eliza Shansey Green reads "A Beautiful World": 1 pm - 2 pm

 Continue your Earth Day Take Action Day celebration with author Eliza Shansey Green in the our Virginia Reed Moore Marine Research Library. Listen to her read her childrens book "A Beautiful World" which takes on a caring, helpful, fun approach to the importance of keeping our world free from litter, in a story of friendship with planet Earth.  

Aquarium exhibits open: 10 am - 5 pm

Since 1935, CMA has been exhibiting Southern California’s rich diversity and adaptations of our local sea life through a combination of aquaria, interpretive displays and museum collections. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall, Exploration Center, Aquatic Nursery and Virginia Reid Moore Marine Research Library comprise a unique science education facility where visitors of all ages can pursue informal marine biology education, ecological awareness, and scientific research training. These complex topics are made fun and accessible by the creative and informative exhibits.

At the Marine Mammal Care Center and International Bird Rescue  (Free; open to all ages):

Seal and sea lion viewing: 7 am - 8 pm

Feeding times 11 am & 3 pm.

Exhibit open 10 am - 4 pm

Bird rescue center open house: 10 am - 4 pm

Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles is a nonprofit that rehabilitates and releases, sick, injured, and malnourished seals and sea lions, and promotes the preservation of marine mammals through education, research and partnerships.  "Patients" are available for viewing from just a few yards away while they socialize, play, eat, and nap in an outdoor care area, and docents are available to answer questions. Exhibits explain more about the animals lives and the dangers they face that people can prevent.

 

International Bird Rescue researches best practices at crisis response hospitals in California and Alaska and shares them worldwide. Their mission is to inspire people to act toward balance with the natural world by rescuing waterbirds in crisis.  For this limited event, IBR will have its educational center open to the public, including presentations about local sea birds and live camera feeds of patient holding areas.

 

Foil boat building and other water learning activities, 10 am - 4 pm

Los Angeles Maritime Institute will be conducting fun,educational activities at MMCC for families to participate in, including building foil boats, doing buoyancy experiments, making rope, and learning nautical knots and trivia about the history of sailing.

At Los Angeles Maritime Institute:

Wildlife observation sail on historic sailing ship, 5 pm - 7:30 pm ($60 adults, $30 kids, all proceeds benefit education programs and wildlife conservation efforts, 10% discount for members of participating organizations)

On board LAMI's historically designed twin tall ships, passengers will have the opportunity to learn and practice how sailors raised the sails on ships in the Age of Sail.  While sailing out of the harbor, you can marvel at the cranes and ships of one of the largest ports in the country and view wildlife such as sea lions and a variety of marine birds.  For this unique sailing event, wildlife experts from Mammal Care Center and International Bird Rescue will be on board to give commentary and answer questions about the animals you observe.  Call LAMI at 310-833-6055 for questions or to purchase tickets.
